NMBM's cleaning and greening zooms into Kariega

Published: November 24, 2022

In a joint operation with stakeholders, NMBM today cleared an illegal dumpsite that hadcaused health concerns in Thomas Gamble, Karega and a stench in the community.

This forms part of the City's cleaning and greening drive where Ward 48 residents were educated and urged to refrain from illegal dumping.
NMBM's Public Health Portfolio Head, Clir Thsonono Buyeye said the City was committed to clearing illegal dumpsite across the City, however residents need to take responsibility andnot dump again following the clean-up.

"In terms of the illegal dumping audit we conducted there are 1973 illegal dumping hotspots. This number varies depending on many contributing factors. Since this year started, we have been working around the clock to fight the illegal dumping problem. When we go to communities, we give them options on how they can dispose their waste as opposed to illegal dumping and this includes recycling and rather contacting the Municipality if people want to get rid of old furniture," said Buyeye.

Residents welcomed the clean-up, education and awareness programme.
"I live right across this dumping spot. For years we have been breathing this dirt, when it is windy all the dirt would come into our yards. It has been horrible, especially for our children as they are growing up surrounded by dirt that is caused by adults. We are very happy and grateful to see the work finally being done today and we really urge other residents to stop dumping illegally as this is not good for our health," said Corenne Rayners

Residents are urged to report illegal dumping to 0800 20 50 50 or 041 506 2833 (during office hours)
