Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan envisioned Nelson Mandela Bay as potentially the best coastal city on the African continent if the great work of his administration over the last nine months can be continued for a number of years.
At the only Mayoral Outreach session for this week at the Port Elizabeth City Hall on Wednesday (23 March), presentations were made regarding expenditure in wards and plans for suburbs such as Summerstrand, Central, Walmer, Gqebera, Millpark, Rowallan Park, Malabar and many others.
Some of the progressive developments include:
The municipality has R1.7 billion in cash holdings in the bank which means its financial affairs are in order,
It has the same credit rating as Ekhuruleni and Cape Town metropolitan municipalities with no other metropolitan municipalities with higher credit ratings,
Preparations for the Metro Police launch in April is going full steam;
Considerable budgets are spent in respective wards; and,
Most potholes must be restored by the end of April and road markings must also be improved amongst many other deliverables.
"There other great coastal cities such as Miami, Sydney, Singapore, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth amongst others.
"If you are happy with what we have done over the last nine months, you can imagine what we will be able to do over the next five years.
"We want this metro to be best coastal city on the African continent. It must be! And so we want you to walk the next five years with us and you will be living in the best coastal city on the African continent and one of the best in the world because it carries the name of one of the greatest icons of the twenty first century,” Mayor Jordaan said.
Some of the issues raised by residents are vagrants, housing, the creative economy, crime and other related safety and security issues. Municipal teams were readily available to take details of all the complaints in an effort to resolve it as soon as possible.
